Music and film
With Super8Super8
(18/10/08)

The japanese listening practice of the kissaten in japan is based upon the premise that no music is a background process. small bars with a dj playing obscure records at uncompromising levels, with extortionate bar prices keeping the clientele exclusively there for the music, interaction is between the self and the music only. listening is not the final moment of music, but its fundamental.
While not as stringent or demanding as this, 7vwwvw’s extended set at the wee red bar contains the essence of this musical appreciation. playing unsupported, in three fifteen minute sets, and accompanied by super8super8 providing live visuals, this performance is very much about a personal connection, than an audience one. i concentrate on the washing sounds, a growth of all-analogue synthesizer, cosy in my ear, like soft felt. a bundling drum machine scratches with hi hat, bumps a distracted kick. no laptops please. similarly, the live visuals are light projectors and 8mm film, divorced from the everyman skills of a laptop, a cutting floor of colour, cartoon hand outs and economy.
In the first section, hills and roads slip by, grain on the screen like rain, and i lose all my thoughts, lost in the repeatedly unfolding roads, mind blank. i feel little but the envelopment of the chair i sit in, the envelop of waves and filters. feeling their way into participation, the end of the second section brings a perfect moment, where everything that is good and right about basic western rhythm unfolds in an incessant kick pattern, and a wet coastline flickers on the screen. heads start nodding, we’re all a-grin. i’d stand and dance if i wasn’t glued to my chair, if i wouldn’t be dancing in the light of a projector.
The business and collaboration of two groups working together for the first time is engaging, the skill and professionalism, understanding and respect. in the days of instant knowledge, where anyone can have a limited understanding of everything, it is pure and fresh to witness skills being brought to the table, and shown up. tonight is all about sitting down and stroking your chin, and sometimes thats the best way to listen.

Audiovisual goodness
I should be sleeping. I started a new job today and after I had finished I felt like I had to get away and experience new faces, new emotions. This is my third part-time job and I won’t have a full day off from now on or opportunities for long lie ins. I could have gone to gigs closer to home but a night in Edinburgh organised by Trampoline had caught my eye and interest. Trampoline strikes me as promoters who care about the music and bands. Also Euan, one of the promoters and whose ‘baby’ Trampoline is, seems to share the same passion as I do towards letting other people know about things that he finds important. When I find out about a band, film, anything really, that I really adore, I’m sure to let everyone know about them. It can almost get out of hand. Trampoline is a bit like that; they find something they like and then look after it, protect it and shout out about it – in a very nice way of course.
This month I made the trip to experience an evening of music and live visuals. The music was provided by 7vwwvw (pronounced mammal) and visuals were by super8super8. I was there early so could pick a prime seat on a comfy sofa in the middle of the room and I loved every minute of it. They had three sets which all were similar but very different at the same time. The visuals in the first one concentrated on a road trip, the second was about the sea and third about 9-5 working life and money. Well, for me anyway. I was completely mesmerized by what I saw on the screen. I smiled, I felt touched and a little choked up during the second one, and the third felt very close to home due to the work situation I am in now. And the music, oh man, you could listen to 7vwwvw all night. Just lie there, listen to it and let your mind wander. Please check these guys out! They seemed like super lovely people too.
